MILWAUKEE (SPECTRUM NEWS 1) -- The summer season is upon us, and with the warm weather sticking around, more folks are getting out and getting active.

But when it comes to sudden activity, there are a few precautions and things to remember in order to stay safe, healthy, and avoid some common injuries seen in the summer.

Dr. Daniel Rogers, a D.O. and Family Medicine Physician with Ascension Columbia St. Mary's in Milwaukee at West Allis, highlights a few injuries that are often seen by medical professionals this time of the year:

The most common injuries are sunburns. While they might seem like just a mark from being out in the sun, some can becme severe and even lead to types of skin cancer. It's important to use the right sunscreen and continue to apply it the more time you spend outdoors.

Other types of injuries include strains, sprains, as well as tendon and ligament tears -- all of which can be caused by overactivity. When it comes to being active, it's important to do it in small steps. Don't jump right into the fast-paced, intensive activity or workouts if you aren't prepared for them.

Another important summer injury is dehydration, which can sometimes lead to heatstrokes. While Wisconsin doesn't typically get scortching hot, it's still very important to get the proper water intake and incorporate it into your diet. It's also important to consider how much time you are spending out in the heat.

The common injuries are more to keep in mind and take the necessary steps to stay healthy this summer. Save yourself the trip to the doctor's office or hospital by knowing what the risks are.
